What is a "drift dive"?

A drift dive occurs when divers allow themselves to be carried by the underwater current while they explore the dive site. This type of diving can be highly enjoyable, as it often covers more ground without the divers needing to exert much effort. Divers typically enter the water at a specific spot and then drift along with the current, observing the marine life and underwater features as they move. This method can provide a unique perspective of the dive site, as the divers may pass over various habitats and formations that may not be easily accessible through traditional swimming methods.

In contrast, the other options describe different types of diving experiences. A controlled environment dive refers to situations where conditions are managed to reduce risks, typically seen in swimming pools or similar settings. Rapidly going deep is associated with techniques that can be risky and is generally not recommended for inexperienced divers. Dives focused on observing marine life at the surface imply snorkeling or very shallow diving, which is not what describes a drift dive's nature or technique.
